| Senior Member+ | are you talking about clipping the edges of your horses tail for showing so you don't have to braid it?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | On the subject of clipping, why do some people cut their horses manes? It looks kind of funny to me, but maybe there's a reason, and I just don't know it. |

| Senior Member+ | By saying you want to clip his tail are you clipping it because it is too long? Thats the only reason why I trim my horses tails. They're outside and they drag in the mud and become horribly tangled if they are too long.

| Senior Member+ | If you trim the end of your horse's tail you arent affecting his or her fly protection. They still have their full tail...it just isnt long enough to drag anymore.

![]() | I wanted to cut it around the edges for showing. Well, not exactly for showing, but right now her tail is a mess and i'd like to clean it up a bit. Like, it's all over the place at the top, messy. I don't want to make it shorter, but her tail gets tangled any way, it's not too long. |

| Senior Member+ | If your horse has a fuzzy top section I would advise regular grooming of the tail and applying a good conditioner regularly. Once you start cutting on a tail, especially the top part you can quickly end up with all sorts of problems. You can pull the hair from the top of the tail to help improve it's appearance, but unless you know what you are doing of have access to someone who does I would advise against it. What I would do is pay extra attention to my tail grooming habits and make sure my horse's tail is kept clean. When I washed it I would make sure I shampoo and clean all the way to the skin and all of the soap is rinsed off of the tail. I would apply a good moisturizer/conditioner to the tail and work it in well, all the way to the skin. I would also take a polo wrap and wrap the top part of the wet tail occasionally. I would not wrap it too tightly, and let the tail dry with it on to help to tame the hair to lay straighter and get rid of that wiry appearance. I would not turn the horse out with the wrap on the tail and would just leave it on while I finished drying and grooming my horse. I would remove it as soon as I was finished or the tail was dry, which ever was first. I would also make sure my horse was not rubbing it's tail on anything and if so I would check to see the last time it was wormed as well as if the skin was dry. A beautiful tail on your horse does not take as much work as one might think if you practice good grooming habits regularly on not just the horse but it's tail as well.
