Also, if he's rubbing, he might need his sheath cleaned (if its a gelding!). Also, fungal problems in the tail are common, we purchased 2 horses that came in with this (at diff. times). Athletes foot powder for a couple weeks clears it up.

instead of clipping it, put it in a tail bag or if your horse doesnt like the tail bag, use figure 8 knot. i will try to explain them 2 you. also if it is kinda broken looking, messy, etc. on top near the base, then it could be rubbing

1.)make sure your horse's tail is clean & brushed.
2.)section off about 3in in diameter though the entire tail.
3.)put the back of yur hand in front of the hair and have it open
4.)bring the hair under your hand & over your palm.
5.)hold onto it from there.
6.)the end piece that you flipped up is now tucked behind the piece going down
7.)bring it all the way around, just so it hangs in your palm, bring it around the other part of it (going up), but dont pull the whole thing through.
8.)make a loop & pull it through

so sry i cant explain it better

Eeeeeew please don't clip your horses tail! I did that to my horses tail and ever sents then I regretted it SO much because you can't do ANYTHING with the top half of it and it annoiys the **** out of you! I cliped my horses tail because she kept pooping on it (she doesn't lift her tail that high) and now I can't plate it or anything. So why do you want to clip it any ways???

I know exactly what you talking about but you don't need to cut it, just groom it regularly and put his or her tail in a bag oh and washing it out as often as possible is very helpful too. Good Luck

clip/pull if your horse has already got a lovely tail i would advise against it simply because once you have done it you have to keep it up or let it grow out and it will not look too nice so love your horses tail as it is

good info but she did not ask how to groom a tail, she asked how to clip it. conditioning the tail isn't going to make it shorter if that is what she wants to do.
While my previous post does contain grooming advice and tips....I posted what I did because instead of cutting off or pulling out the hairs at the top of MoonlightPrincess's horse's tail that look unruly I was providing her with an alternative to cutting and pulling that would help her horse's tail look nicer while it grows those short hairs back out.
She even said that she did NOT want to make her horse's tail shorter as you can see:

I think I know what you are talking about because at the barn I used to ride at they were big showers and they did it. Are you talking about trimming the top so that it doesnt look like a birds nest? Because if you are I'm pretty sure what they did was just cut most of it off in the summer so that it would lay long and they wouldnt have that. And in the winter when they dont show (which is September to May because we have 3 feet of snow on the ground during that time) they just brush and condition alot, and put one of those tail boots by professional choice on it so they cant rub it off. Hope this helps
