| Senior Member | The higher the number goes, on the clipper blade, does it do a closer cut, or a shorter? i have some clippers that i bought a few months ago, and i need a new blade, right now i have a #10... so like, would a #30 make it a closer shave, or leave the hair longer?

| Senior Member | I would use a 10 for the legs, 30 for the whiskers and bridle path, and 10 for the ears. But if you want to take all the hair off the inside of the ears like for showing, I would use a 30. I just take some off the edges to neaten her ears and leave the rest to protect from flies, so I use a 10. If you're a beginner clipper, you can use a 10 blade at first for all of your clipping--it will be more forgiving if you slip. A 30 can leave an almost bare spot!

| Senior Member | Im a groomer and i can tell ya all you need to know about clipper bldes...here's a little break down. A 40 is a surgical blade...you know the one the vets use to shave the animals before surgery. Hence its VERY SHORT. We use it to get a clse clip only on the dogs pads. A 30 blade comes next and its also just used for pads (in grooming of course) A 10 blade is the safest blade out there and its fairly short too. I use it to shave my horses hoofs (like around them to make then look neater, i also shave her one white sock to make it really pop) I would always recomment a 10 blade, for over all body shaves or just for little stuff....its the safest!! Also with blades if you use then in reverse (cut against the hair growth not with it) it will make the hair cut even closer, just a heads up. There are also like #7, #5, #4, and comb attachements but i would recomment a 10 lol. Hope this helps!! |

| Senior Member+ | I too am a groomer, but do show grooming versus pet clips on dogs... I also do grooming on Stock Horse Breeds and Arabians... I like a #50 surgical blade for muzzle area, eye area. I then like to blend that in with a #30, then #15, then #10 so that you don't get a strong 'clippered' effect on the face. I like the #15 for the bridle path, used backwards (against the growth of the coat). On the legs I like a #15 blended in with a #10. When in doubt a #10 blade is a fairly short clip and fairly safe clip. |
