Are they leather or suede? Either way I hose mine or rinse them in the sink, then use either leather cleaner or suede cleaner.

I have suede half chaps and I used to brush the dirt off and hand wash if they got really bad... now I just throw them in the washing machine, they are falling apart anyway so it doesn't matter too much. They get super stiff after (it's like wrapping stiff card round my leg when I first put them back on) but they soften up after a while.

Get leather wash from any of the horse catalogs (made to wash full seat leather breeches). Hose them down well first, using a brush to scrub the mud off. Then follow the directions on the bottle of wash. Make sure to hang or lay flat to dry in the SHADE or in the house.

I think that Murphy's Oil Soap works as well as any of the specialty leather washes or cleaners, and much better than saddle soap.

It's cheap and you can buy it in your local grocery or hardware store. You should probably follow up with a leather conditioner, such as Lexol, etc.
