And not all falls happen in the same manner, you could fall off at a canter and nothing happen, or fall of at a walk and break your arm, things happen differently, and wearing a helmut does improve your chances of getting less injured on your head!

I'll REPEAT that. People seem to forget that, as I've had that same conversation it seems about Christopher Reeves.

His injuries were NOT from a massive head injury....it was from a broken neck...

Show me a helmet that protects your neck, and you'll find yourself a VERY rich person at the other end of that patent.

He was doing cross country, the fences were three foot six. Wasn't this just posted from a website?

Flying into a solid wood jump and a "puny hunter course" are two different things entirely.

Gee,isn't people tired of this helmet thing? There was another thread about this, this is like beating a dead horse.

I didn't mean for this to turn into a helmet thread...I honestly just wanted to know how CR sustained his injuries. I've heard people come out and say he was too big for the horse he was riding, the horse had health issues and he shouldn't have been riding at the level he was on that particular horse...basically, it was an accident waiting to happen.

Christopher Reeves was brought up on another board when someone asked why helmets were never worn when participating in a particular sport involving horses. The reference was out of context but it made me wonder if the above comments were true.

(i have not read all post so i dont know if its been answered)
from what i remember of his actual fall, he put his arms straight out, they got stuck in the bridle which prevented him from "sumersaulting" and cause him to land straight on his head which collapsed his neck and paralyzed him.

i think that learning how to fall is a very important safety part of learning to ride. just as important as wearing a helmet.

but yes i think helmets are good for any discipline

Sounds pretty stupid when you say it like that, doesn't it?
.

Okay, I'm sorry but I have to agree with commanderkins on this one and say that that comparison is like comparing apples and oranges. No one in their right mind would use that comparison. It just DOESNT jive...there is no comparison to this and riding with or without a helmet.

Helmets prevent the risk of serious injury or death due to head/brain trauma. Prevent, not remove all risk.
Such a sad story about Christover Reeves. Interesting this thread was created as I was just thinking about him and his story the other day.

I dont think Christophers fall had anything to do with lack of skill or an accident waiting to happen, it was just bad luck. And as everyone is saying a helmet cant protect you against neck injuries.

He was doing a X-Country course and the jumps are solid. Did you not read Sandras post?

I heard that he had the horse really going fast into the fence, which is not the best way to approach some X-Country jumps. You are find if its a spread, but I think the jump was an upright or a zig-zag.
