Chiropractor - Update & Concerns.

My horse saw the chiropractor today. Turns out his shoulder and pelvis on the left side were locked up, he got adjusted all around. Checked out the saddle I use and he said it fits fine but as he gains more weight I will need a new one.

Anyway, the chiro suggested I ride him w/t for 15-20 minutes today after he left. So I began to groom Fire, and noticed that he was really reluctant to pick up his left hind foot. Saddled him up and took him to the arena to free lunge him. I asked him to trot on the straightaway (going to the left), and he about fell over. His left hind sort of gave out on him and he did a 180, faced the other way, and stopped. I asked him two more times and he did the exact same thing.

So, I did some little stretches with his legs and put him up for the day.

My concern is that either the chiropractor actually whacked out his pelvis so now he can't even trot (he loped and walked both directions on his own accord) or if he just needs time to adjust to the adjustment.

So now my horse is still unrideable and even worse off after I spent $90 to get him adjusted. What do I do and why is he doing this?

Darn...that's scary. I'd be phoning the Chiro and telling him.

Definitely call the chiro and tell him what happened. If he screwed up he should fix it for no expense to you.

Or he may say that that may happen and to wait until tomorrow.

But it won't hurt to give him a call and ease your concerns.

I would let the adjustment sit for a few days. Generally the horse experiences some soreness after getting adjusted, just as a human does, and they need time to get used to it.

I'm surprised the chiro said to work him that day. My chiro always has me give Callie a day or even 2 off then gradually get her back into work watching her movement to see if she is ready to go from walk to trot etc.
Your horse is likely sore from the adjustment and working is the last thing he wants to do. Additionally, just like when we get adjusted - if we aren't used to it the electrical pulses now feel much different to our bodies... I think your horse needs time off to let his body accept what just happened to it.

Call the chiro anyway. Yes, the horse may be okay in the morning, but you still want to have it on record that there was a problem. (In case you were to put it off, call her in 3 or 4 days, and then be expected to pay another visit or even an emergency fee!)

He was much better today, I lunged him and hopped on for about three minutes. He didn't really have a good reaction to that, so I just ended on a good note and got off him for the day. He has some heat in his hoof, so he may have the beginnings of an abcess. There is so much stuff wrong with this horse it's hard to tell which pain is coming from where.

I think the adjustment was fine, he didn't step funny or do anything that wasn't just plain ********edness. I was going to call the chiropractor if it wasn't dramatically better by today. He would trot and lope in both directions just fine so I don't think anything is wrong, he was just sore I guess.

We also found that the 3rd saddle we tried (which I rode in today) doesn't fit him either. We are trying all of the saddles at the barn tomorrow to see what might fit him. I just sold my saddle but I don't want to buy a new one because he will grow out of it in a month as he has about 200-300lbs to gain in fat and muscle.
