We have a couple of chickens that live at our farm, and thier alone for about 2 days w/ plenty of food and water until someone goes back and refills everything. The only problem is that now w/ winter thier water keeps freezing over, so my grandpa told me unless I can come up w/ a way to keep the water unfrozen they have to go. I really do not want to lose my chickens, thier my babys( I raised them as chicks in my bedroom) and need ways to keep the water unfrozen. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe a small ball in the area where the water comes out?

you need a brooder lamp, they are cheap, you position it over their water and it will keep it from freezing, that is what I used in my chicken house when I had chickens....they are not expensive, most feed stores have them. Just make sure that where you put it, it cannot be knocked down and cause a fire! I hung mine from the rafters of the chicken house with a small chain. I also had a metal chicken water holder, it held a gallon and a half of water at one time, that would be more than enough water for your chickens for 2 days....Cathy

any pet store sells a dish that heats, they are mainly used for dogs. I don't know if that helps? Or you have to give water every morning and every night. You will need 2 dishes, one to take in the house to thaw it and an empty to refill with water, since the last time you were there, it froze.

How do you take care of the chickens? Do they roam the property or live in a pen? If they roam the property they should be fine without food or water. They will find food in horse poo and bugs and stuff around the barn, and little cat/dog dishes with water will work fine..but a ball or a stick in the water should help.

I use a heated dog water bowl for mine in the winter. You just need to plug it in and keep it filled!

Our chickens live in a large section of our old barn(they enjoy staying inside for some odd reason, when we let them out they run out of that section into the next one over and keep switching) and since they live at the old farm, about an hour away they only get attention about 3-4 days out of the week. We're not allowed to have chickens at the barn here so its the only place to keep them, but I'll tell him about the brood lamp. That shouldnt be hard to do since we have about 6 of them and he was planning on puttin them out to keep them warm. Thanks everyone for your help!!!
