Chestnut X Chestnut = ??

Hi My mare is Chestnut with chestnut mane and tail and I put her in foal to Iroko who is also chestnut. She had a Bay colt foal. If one googles this it seems impossible but the stud farm claim Iroko has done this before.

It will be a few weeks before the DNA results will be back so in the meantime i am wondering if any of you have experience of this happening?

Thanks

Are you sure you got the stallion you asked for? Two chestnuts are supposed to have chestnut offspring. I am told that minis break the rules all the time, but I would suspect some other sire sired your foal.

How could two genetically red horses possibly have a foal that was not also red?

It's possible one parent is wild bay (A+?). Wild bays can appear chestnut. Can we have pictures of the parents? (and the grandparents' colors and pictures would be helpful as well)

It's just occurred to me--one parent could be black-based silver.

Can we see pictures of the foal? Babies can look VERY odd.

Thanks for reply.

The mare was A.I. 'd in the stud farm and kept there until the 16 day scan and foaled on the due date.

I was surprised that the stud farm claimed this happened before with the same stallion as the geneticists claim it is impossible.

I presume an innocent mistake was made so I was surprised that they claimed they could not have made a mistake.

Yes, you can get a bay from Chestnut to Chestnut crosses. It is not as uncommon as you think either. Actually you could also get pali and cremello for ChestxChest too. It is simply a matter of dilution genes and gene strengths with also some possiblities of throwback genes.

Genetics can be very interesting. Would you mind showing us pics and tell us who the stud is?

I will post pics later.

Sire of Mare is Morgangold Major ( Palomino )

Mare's Dam is Chestnut

Sire of Mare's Dam is Grandioso

Foals sire is Iroko ( supposedly )

Iroko's sire is Pilot ( Bay )

I understand when chestnuts are involved that ancestor's color is irrelevant???

I've always been told that it was a guaranteed chestnut...the color generator (http://www.animalgenetics.us/CCalculator1.asp) says that it is a guaranteed chestnut no matter what factors I change...I'm curious to know what ACC or the other color gurus have to say about this

No, you cannot.

Also incorrect. One parent must have a cream gene to produce a dilute offspring.

Iroko definitely looks chestnut:

Before my foal arrived I had not even thought of the color possibilities, but when my vet and the net said the foal had to be chestnut i began to have doubts about the sire
