Checka got hurt! *graphic pics*

Yesterday my mom and I had to pick up and put up all 537 bales of our hay with only a 3 other guys. It was taking a long time, but we finished just as it was getting dark. We went back to our place to turn our horses out to the new pasture, and there was Checka with 3 large slices in her chest. We haven't ever had an emergency before, so we called our neighbors to come help us. They just helped us to hold her while we cleaned it with Nolvasan. It was dark and way after hours to call the vet, and it was looking like it was already at least 10 hours old so it was not bleeding. We penned her up and tried to keep her as still as possible for the night.

Today we got an appointment with the vet and trailered her over. My mom told the vet that I wanted to be a vet, and he was really nice. He explained the entire procedure as they were doing it, even let me give her the tetnus shot.

They said that it would for sure need stitches. Checka was a little trooper! She stood there for them to drug her, and I was so sad to see her in the stocks swaying around! She was leaning so hard into the panels that she started to suffocate herself though, so we had to make her stand on her own. My mom made a comment about her heavy percheron head, and the vet was like "What? She is part percheron?" I guess that Percheron's react harder to the anesthesia. They gave her enough anesthesia for an 800lb horse, not the recommended lower dosage. I had to stand and hold her head for the procedure.

Because the wound was more than 24 hours old, they had to freshen the wound. They cut off 3mm around the edge of the entire cut. It bled so much! There was about a 4 foot ring around her chest on the ground that was constantly splashing from little drips coming down. I have a strong stomach, and I even started to feel lightheaded! She ended up getting 11 stitches, a tetanus shot, a long time walking trying to wake her up before we could trailer home, and a weeks worth of delicious antibiotics. It lost us $365 for the hour and a half of stitching.

Checka was mad when we got home, the vet said to leave her in a stall, no run out, for at least 5 days so she doesn't pop the stitches. She can only go for hand walks. She is not a happy camper! She is also being fed antibiotics, and getting her cuts washed every other day. We switched our horses into our neighbors pasture so her mom could be closer to Checka. She can't be with them, but she calms down when her mom is in sight.

I don't have any before pics, it was kind of a panic, but I do have the after pics!

Ouch! That looks awful! I'm glad you got it all taken care of though... I don't think my stomach could have handled it.

Do you have any idea what she may have done it on?

ouch! I was about to say...looks like she got into barbed wire. Maybe you should think about changing it since Barbed wire def is not horsey proof . Just a suggestion though.

Oh believe me I want to. It isn't our place though, it belongs to my moms bf, and he goes by the old cowboy ways. He said to just throw some bluekote on it and it would heal by itself. We took her to the vet. We are actually looking to buy our own pasture to put up our own fencing and whatnot. I hate barbed wire so much!

I'm astonished that a vet would stitch up something that old and that had already had "stuff" put in it

You really should do something about the barbed wire. If you go to Horseguard Fence : the best electric fence for Horse you can find there products that allow you to string a strand of electric tape 10" or so off the barbed wire. This would allow you to put the tape inside the fence, providing a visual barrier AND an electric reminder to stay AWAY. It's material you could take down and take with you if you do end up getting your own land.

We love our horseguard fencing. It's CHEAP, too. We did 100x200 for about $1500. It would have been cheaper, but we bought the t-post covers and a solar box.

There's about a 12-24 hour window on stitching. I've seen vets remove tissue on "older" wounds to get a fresh surface. Looks like the BF needs to rethink his ways.

Yeah, I can see freshening up the wound in order to stitch to viable tissue, but what about the fact that it had already had Nolvasan applied?
