Chances of a rig reproducing!! help please!

for the past 3 months my mare has been sharing a field with what we thought was a 3 year old gelding. but has always shown high spirit stallion behaviour but has got worse and began constantly mounting my mare. we decided to have the vet to check him who was concerned he would be a rig or closer to a stallion as he had be gelded by gypsys and may not have been done properly.
he has had blood tests take to determine if he is but i am very concerned for my mare who however has had a foal before at one point but is 12 now. the pair are now very close and difficult to seperate.
what are the chances of her being in foal or does anyone know or does anyone know a rig producing a foal?
are there any early signs too of pregnancy i could watch for in the mean time such as would she still 'squirt' for him and others like she was?

Hrm, kinda of confusing post but okay...

If he doesn't have testicals, he can't make babies. See, without testicals, he's shooting blanks.

well - TECHNICALLY speaking if he is a rig and he has a retained testicle, the sperm will die off due to the increased heat retained by the testicle that is way up high

That is why, on hot days, you see stallions with their testicles hanging very very low - its natures way of keeping things *cool* and viable inside! And in colder weather, why they tuck them up high to keep things warm in there ...

but - I guess anything is possible and it would also depend on how high up the testicle is. Higher up - probably no chance at all, lower down - maybe???

Did the vet get a chance to palpate him and see if he could feel anything?

I was daying reading this but I honestly always wondered why somedays Touch looked like he had been gelded and then somedays he wanted everyone to know he is a stallion!

On those chilly days Jamie..... Touch is just keeping the boys warm!

To the OP, I think that people assume horses are crytorchids whenever they see sexual or aggressive behavior.... more often than not the horse is not. But it sure doesn't hurt to test.

oh and if the start of the thread is confusing sorry i can go on quite abit without reading what i write but say it to myself as i type. lol

Regardless of whether he is actually able to impregnate your mare... I am not sure I would want them pastured together if he is indeed, mounting and attempting to accomplish the act. (insertion) I would worry about him causing problems with your mare physically.

Unfortunatly, I've seen many mares foal out after being in a herd with a "gelding" that was a rig or a crypt, because everyone told them that they could not have viable sperm Usually, they are not viable, but to many times the horse is the "exception" and a few little swimmers are tougher than they are supposed to be. So yes, if he is still shooting live rounds, then your mare could become preggers.

Like April, if he is constantly mounting your mare, I would keep them separated for health concerns.

My first stallion - Spot Pocket - arrived from North Carolina in February. It was our beyond coldest month and it was brutally cold when he arrived with his slick, southern coat - a long stretch of weather that was about -20-25F

For the first few weeks, I peered very anxiously "up there" as I swore I'd been had, and bought a gelding. I tentatively felt around and couldnt feel anything either and I got VERY VERY nervous about this strange turn of events ...

I mentioned this to a friend who has stood stallions for a LONG time and after he sputtered and burst out laughing, he explained "things" to me ...

And yes - come the warmer weather ... Spotty looked VERY much like a stallion SHOULD look, "down there" ...

OH, and another VERY interesting issue that I found out about this weekend. Jason had a colt in for training. He was a crypt and they had the vet out to go after the one that was retained along with the hanging one, LOL. They got the job done, took out 2 testicles, got him healed and thought they were done. Well, the colts hormone levels kept him in trouble long after he should have quiet down and decided being a gelding was ok. He was still a dang little stud in attitude and it wasn't getting better. Well, after another check, guess what? He had another testicle Yep, had another one retained. He had a total of 3! Shocked the heck out of everyone. While it's not completely unheard of, it is extremely rare. Owners were giving the trainer trouble over the colts atttitude, giving him a hard time about not getting both testes as a joke, but the "joke" was on them. And no, they didn't miss one the first time as both the vet and trainer had 2 laying on the ground after the first surgery, it really was a 3rd one.
