Can someone shed some light on HYPP N/H?

The closest I come to being a Quarter Horse person is with Appendixes - they just aren't a breed I follow very closely, so when it comes to HYPP and the effects - I am clueless.

I found a gelding (Appendix) that I am quite fond of, a little out of my price range but I am still placing him at the top of my list. However, his HYPP status is N/H and I am not quite sure what that means... can he be affected by the HYPP? Or is he simply a carrier?

If any QH people would like to see his ad, I can PM it to you.

He's not just a carrier, he can be affected by the disorder. Those horses need
special care and even if you do everything right it's no guarantee they won't
have an attack.
Here's AQHA's page on it: http://www.aqha.com/association/registration/hypp.html

Youtube video of a pretty bad attack:
another video with a variant:
I personally wouldn't risk it, you have to weigh what the horse is worth to you
against the possibility (even if it's a slight possibility) of an attack/death.

... and of an attack while you're riding.

Personally I won't even consider a horse if they're N/H.

Thank you so much for clearing it up, looks like I will pass then. It's a shame too, he was such a pretty boy.

Unfortunately being a gelding does not matter in this case... he could still have an attack when you are riding. I have a girlfriend that had an attack while her horse was jumping and she has several broken bones.

That must be frightening. I am surprised though, because the price they are asking for a horse that can have attacks like was made known to me is odd, but I guess you have to be thankful they gave is HYPP status in the first place...

Perhaps he has not yet had an attack, or at least not a severe one.

That is one of the scariest things about HYPP in my opinion. A horse can go years and never have a visible problem, and then one day they can have a massive, even fatal, one.

Some people don't care and are willing to take that risk to get the 'look' that the HYPP horses tend to have. Then you also have the uneducated people who, unlike you, don't take the time to educate themselves and make the assumption that only H/H horses have attacks or that since an N/H horse hasn't had an observed attack yet, that they won't.

And just because an attack hasn't been observed on a horse doesn't mean they haven't had one. I don't know of anyone that watches their horses 24/7.

Well , I am so glad I took the time to look into it. I didn't even contact the owner before consulting with the HGS gurus! I knew I didn't know much , if any about it, so that's why I figured I would do some research before getting emotionally involved with the horse and being uneducated!

Even if the horse never had an attack, I wouldn't consider - what I have been informed to makes my decision very easy - even if he is beautiful

Please read: I was crushed when my N/H horse had an episode while I was riding him. He never showed any signs before that. I was literally crushed, and all the surgeries, recovery time, and physical therapy in the world won't give me back the confidence I once had on a horse.
