Can anyone tell me how much a section of railroad track weighs?

Some of you are good googlers and I'm in a hurry. I've got a 13 ft section of railroad track and someone wants to buy 5ft of it. It's salvaging for $5 per 100# so how much does one generally weigh, LOL!!

According to my AutoCAD software, a 13' piece of structural railroad is about 380 pounds, for one side.

Thanks! There is a number on the rail, 1926. I suppose that is the manufacture date? From what little I've found, the pound per yard is supposed to be on it. DH said he couldn't find it though.

Brandi,

I called a supplier we use for Rail and it can vary on application, but the range for Train Track Rails is 115 lbs to 141 lbs per yard, they did not know what the 1926 meant.

It actually depends upon the size of the rail cross-section, too, not just the length. Heavier track is used on the "main" lines than on the sidings, for example.

This article, however, suggests that the average is about 139 pounds per 3'.

BTW, the Google.com query to get that was simply "Weight of railroad track".

Dont mean to go off topic here, but why do you have sections of railroad and why would someone want to buy it? I have never heard of such a thing. I actually thought this was some kind of riddle, but I guess not, lol. Im really not trying to be snotty or snarky, just genuinely curious.

Rail road ties, or the big pieces of wood, are GREAT to use for hitching posts, against banks to help with erosion - TONS of things!

We have many of them at my grandmas, and I love them!

But be aware that they contain dangerous chemicals as preservatives. Don't use them in your veggie garden, etc.
