We had a maiden mare that had been brutilized in a field by another mare when she was younger (of course we didn't know this until After we bred her!). Every time my stallion would go to mount her she would scream and try to run away. In order to get her bred we had to twitch her and place her in a corner so she could not run away. It was awful. She would cry pitifully. It did not matter how quiet, gentle etc. the stallion was. She was fine until he reared to mount, then she just got scared to death. She did take, but did not retain the pregancy. However, the following year when she came back to be bred (I told the owners that I would not go through that again, if she was afraid, she was not getting bred), she stood like a champ and understood what was wanted of her, just like she'd been doing it all her life. She had a beautiful stud colt in 05. Pics attached.

I wish you friend were closer to me (I have twh).
It sounds like the mare was not quite ready, and the owner threw her in the pasture with the stallion. I don't pasture breed. I only breed in hand. It is just too dangerous as far as I am concerned. I don't want to take the chance with my stallion or someone elses mare.

Just an FYI, it is not unusual for the stallion to "pitch a fit" when his lady is leaving. It really means nothing that he was carrying on as she left. I am sure he was upset by the fact she was leaving and he didn't even get to do his job!LOL

He said the mare was never receptive to the stud and fought him the hole time. She even broke through a fence to get away from him. Her mare looks awful. She has cuts on her back and side and even on her face.

The breeder told her to get the mare vet checked and maybe she needs hormone therapy! Is it possible for a mare to be unbreedable? I had never heard of this. I would hate for my friend to spend alot of money trying to breed her mare at the expence of the mare's health. The whole thing sounds fishy to me.

That is why I need your information and opinions. I will print them out and give them to my friend. My friend is heartbroken and confused, so am I...
I am glad I am not planning on breeding my mare. I would not be able to keep my composure if my mare got cut up like that. The breeder said it was from the studs shoes and from the fight... WOW!!

Thank you in advance to all my HGS friends for your help...
Definitely possible! Mares can be very picky... And she could have hormonal issues. I would have her examined by the vet to ensure she's sound for breeding. If everything checks out physically, she might try AI for her first foal. The vet can documnent her heat cycle and inseminate her at the proper time(s). Then after her first successfull foal, she may be more receptive to studs.

I think she means when a mare "squirts", urinates in small amounts to "flirt" with the boys. They end up with it all over the back of their legs, lol. It's stickier too. Their vulva will "wink" while they are doing this, so it's pretty obvious what they are doing.

First, the mare may not be "breedable" at this time. Unless she's been under lights since November, she won't be in heat until you start some kind of light therapy. But by now, it will still be around march before she's even ready. Plus, you still have transition, where they LOOK in heat, but they aren't producing a true follicle. A quick hormone shot to shut them down and recycle them, and the next heat, should be a true heat.

If she hasn't been under 16 on, 8 off lights, just hold off till April to plan a breeding. Cause basically, your screwed till then anyways.

I wouldn't call her unbreedable in any way. She wasn't cycling, that's it.

Go for A.I or keep her there for longer.
