Calling all color genetics experts!

I just came across this mare today on a for-sale page. From the breeder's website, "Black but due to Dun and maybe another diluter appears tan dunwith near leopard pattern. Has been DNA tested No Agouti gene. So she is a true Grulla!"

"
DNA tested no Agouti aa. This mare will produce black and whites."

"
DNA tested Black with Dun So she is a grulla!!! "Ee aa Dd She has other modifiers that lighten her coat."

Newborn -

3 Weeks -

3 1/2 months, and looking like a typical grulla -

Yearling, starts getting copper colored spots -

2 years, and almost the same color as those spots now, all over -

Fast forward to 2007 -

Added, this picture is a closeup of her head and neck which seems to show some of her dun characteristics, but they're no longer black.

Lp by itself can cause a grulla horse to turn gold, turn the black points red, and the black mane and tail cream? Do you have any other pictures of that phenomenon to show as an example?

And I was right!

Sure can... and she is the best example there is. Just ask the appy breeders on here how many of their bays wind up looking dark chestnut even down to light bronzey legs and light manes and tails.

If I have time later I'll find some more examples, but Lp is known for doing CRAZY things to base colors.
