Calf Manna

I was at a barn years ago that fed the horses Calf Manna by Manna Pro. I'm not even sure why it was fed... it's a high protein/low fat supplement, and according to the nutrition facts on the website they weren't feeding nearly enough to make a difference. Here is the nutrition information...

http://mannapro.com/calf-mannaTD.htm

So does anyone know what Calf Manna is supposed to be used for? Does anyone feed it, and why?

years ago my first trainer used it for his breeding stallions, and lactating mares as well as his racing stock. i was young and didn't question any of it, but haven't had the need for it in my own dietary programmes. yet. it was dosed in a cardboard cup that came with it, smelled of licorice due to the anise i think. been a long time!

Oh yeah, I remember the little cup! And it does smell like licorice... I think that was actually one of the selling points??

could be, lol! came in a smaller 50 lb paper, red/white bag, WAAAY back when grain was only in 100lb burlap. blue seal was 10 cents back on every bag returned. that stopped when they went to the plastic burlap stuff. then all went to 50 lbs, and a bazillion different grains/RBs/supps, etc were born : )

Usually it's fed to help raise protein levels in the diet.

Calf Manna is used for different reason's but I believe the most common is to put weight on live stock. I used it to try and put weight on Riley and it didn't really do much. Yep, it smells like licorice, I'm not to fond of the smell, or the product.

I miss the Blue Seal feeds... Trotter, Charger, Vintage Sr... funny, even before all the supplements and new feeds hit, I boarded at a barn full of healthy, happy horses. Maybe Calf Manna was the answer to supplementing these now-inferior feeds.

personally, i don't see much CM any more. with BLue Seal's SUnshine pellets among others, extended research and broader knowledge of nutrition, i think many "grains" are improved. i also believe that with all the choices, dietery issues abound as it is easy to minimally feed a horse without actually killing him. as fragile as they might be systemically, they are equally hearty in other areas and can recover from devestating conditions. they can also fail in the shmanciest of barns.

life was a bit simpler in less choices back then. less of everything i guess. kinda miss it but the now is do-able, too. the future, ..well.... tomorrow is a new day : )

Calf Manna is an 'all stock' product. Meaning that it is designed to be safe to feed to various species of animals. This also unfortunately means that it is not properly balanced to any species of animal.

Calf Manna works in a similar way to the way that today's ration balancers work. The difference being that ration balancers are designed for the specific needs of equines, and also (as a most general rule) contain more healthy ingredients (calf manna contains grain).

I've used it for years on and off. Generally to put weight on or to increase the protein of other feed. Right now I'm feeding it to my orhpan foal simply because he's on the Manna Pro milk replacer and they recommend the Calf Manna as part of the creep feed to go along with it. According to them the protein in it comes from sources that are easy for a foal to digest. I don't know what those sources are but I believe that's where the smell comes from simply because I've noticed a lot of foal feeds smell the same way.
