Buying First Horse

How many of you when horse shopping for you’re first horse bought the first horse you went and tried?

This coming Saturday I’m going to look at a horse, this will be my first horse. I’ve been around horses since my early teens, but was unable to buy my own until now. So far on paper this horse sounds perfect for what I’m looking to do (team penning, barrel racing) the horse has a few quirks due to not having been ridden in a couple of years, but nothing I can’t handle.

Anyway, I’m just curious as to how many people bought the first horse they went to see, did you just put a deposit down to hold it or did you pay the full asking price on the spot?

You could go with "well, I have "this" amount of $$ to spend.." Many people who sell advertise for more than they will take (been there, done that..)
I would say.. as long as you're basing your decision on your abilities, as well as the horse's suitability for what you want, you're on the right track.

When i got my horse Rayven, i wasnt even looking, i was trying to sell my pony. She called we went to look i liked her and we decided to trade horses with another 200$ i think it is wise to go see a horse especially your first one. but a lot of people say it turns out ok not going to see them and just brining them home. i would not put any money down on it. if she is experianced she knows first come, first serve. but that doesnt always happen in the horse world but i would still not put any money down on the horse until you know you like him, can handle him, etc.

btw! Welcome!
heres me and my horse

She was eating dont mind her....big pig!!

good luck, do you have a link to your horse your interested in? we love seeing this stuff!

Thanks, I wasn't actually planning on getting a horse for at least another year, but a friend of mine got me hooked on Ranch Rodeos and I decided I'm at a good place right now to be able to afford not only buying the horse but the daily/monthly cost of one.

Btw, thanks for the welcome and you're mare is beautiful!, I've always had a soft spot for Appaloosas.

imjustjoking22 - You're horse is gorgeous!

I'm getting my first horse soon... we're buying it sight-unseen. We put a refundable deposit on the horse already and we're doing a two week trial as well with the horse. It's pretty awesome but I am confident about this horse.

I tried to - but my trainer had previously owned that horse so I knew a lot about him. Unfortunately, he didn't pass his pre-purchase exam, so I couldn't get him. Also, two months after I almost bought him, he died of kidney failure

Champ was the first horse I looked at. I was looking on the net for months (wistfully) and told hubby - "I am just going to look I am not going to buy him - he is too old for what I want". lol I lasted one night mainly thinking about how he may be treated if someone else got him. Poor thing needed immediate attention (teeth, infected eye) and I wasnt sure someone else would to it, due to his age (21). He is in a happier place now! Soon, he will retire, and become paddock companion for my next horse, when we move to the country (yes I havent stopped dreaming!!)

My first horse was given to me so I wasn't about to be picky... I am right now in the process of getting another horse now.

My suggestion to you though would be to DEFINITELY get a pre-purchase exam. Since that horse hasn't been ridden in a year+ then for what you want to do with the horse, I'd make sure that it's able to handle that kind of activity.
