Buying a Resuce

How many of you would prefer to do this as opposed to buying a horse from...a loving caring home? I am looking at a couple right now and I would really like to adopt. I think it would be great for me and the horse!! Rayven will be retiring and I will need a new gamer and why spend thousands of dollars on a horse that already has a loving home, and is ready for a new home, as opposed to a horse that has never had a loving home (well maybe not NEVER) What do you think??

You cant win anything without a good partner, wheather you be on his back or right next to him.it just wont happen.

Rescue is SO rewarding. Not only are you helping the horses at the rescue with your adoption donation (adoption fee), but you are giving a neglected/abused horse a loving home and a second chance at life.

I HIGHLY suggest rescuing, and it's not just because I volunteer with a shelter, and 2 rescues LOL!! But rescuing is my first choice, ALWAYS.

All my horses are rescues

I might adpot from a rescue.... though with all the red tape, and rules, it can make it a hassle to go thru...

I also dont like that some rescues retain ownership of the horse and can reclaim it without notice or reason.

I would be more inclined to just go out and find a horse that needs a good home...

I did'nt vote, sorry..lol

IMPO, as long as you have the money and knowledge to deal with "special" needs that may accur in rescuing, and as long as you are fully prepared for any quirks, re-training or training in general then I would say yes by all means rescue is the way to go. You save a horse, and it is sooo rewarding. However if you are looking to hop on and go you may be better off buying a horse from someone that knows the full history of the horse, and has proven the horse is trained and suitable for the discipline of your choice. If you do decide to go with a rescue (or type) and are prepared for what goes along with it congratulations and I wish there were more ppl like you out there! Oh and dont forget to share pics!!!

Depends on what your long term plans for the horse are and if the "rescue" horse will meet those needs. Often people get hung up on the emotional part and forget the practical side. Is the horse going to fit the intended use. With as many horses as there are today needing homes and for sale it is truly a buyers market. I cannot understand someone spending several thousand dollars on a rescue when they can buy a perfectly good, pedigreed, broke to ride, with no issues horse for several hundred.

I had a GREAT rescue horse that i leased for a year- he was soo much fun...

BUT... he constantly had lameness issues, hoof issues, and diarrhea (since he was starved he would go to the bathroom in his food so that it would be unappetizing to other horses).

It is very rewarding but also can be very tough. I would NOT recommend getting a rescue to SAVE money- often it is quite pricey to maintain them as opposed to a horse that has been well taken care of from the beginning.

Good luck with your decision- if you are willing to put in all of the work, and probably some extra medical care, supplements, etc, then it can definitely be worth it- but make sure you have the time/resources to do that first.
