Buying a horse after seeing it once?

There is this GORGEOUS TB that I am looking at (dreamhorse ID# 1162298) but I live about 5 hrs from him. They said they would meet me somewhere, but that means I would try him and if I liked him I would buy him and take him home right then. My parents work, so this is like my one chance to get him. Can I have them sign something that says if the vet check doesnt work out or if we dont "click" after a few weeks, they have to buy him back? Is this just a bad idea? He sounds like such a good boy, but it also seems kinda risky. What do you think? Any ideas? Thanks!!
ps- Tell me what you think of him on dreamhorse!

im not so sure about buying him after seeing him only once... can you do a week long trial or something similar? have you discussed this with the seller?

If I really liked the horse then I would have the Vet do a pre-purchase on the horse before I went to meet them. That way if it does not pass I would be saving myself a trip....as well as the risk (and additional time & expense) to return the horse if it did not pass the vet check once I had it home.
If you do take the horse on trial...having it Vet checked before you actually take the horse then ensures that you have the Vet's pre-purchase documentation as to its condition when you assumed possession..protecting you and the seller.

I dont know, Its really odd, I dont think I would do it personally, because, you just dont know about everything, personally, I will never make that mistake again, but i got a GREAT horse out of it, but I got to ride her a lot before I actually got her...i would opt out to get him. You can probably find the same type of horse (obviously different!! ) for the same price, and he/she would be closer, but that is just my take on it.

he is a GEORGOUS horse, but i just think it would be way to risky to drive 5hrs and get a horse after you ride it once...but like i said, its just my take on it..

good luck! let me know what you decide!

He is quite a looker.

You could ask them if they would be willing to do a trial for a few weeks and if it doesn't work out you would give the horse back and get the deposit back =]

If you do end up taking him on a trial basis you should look into getting him insured just for saftey sake =] hope this helps

We bought my horse after seeing her once. I rode her, and we left. The vet check was about a week later [At their facility, we were not present], and when she passed we bought her and went and picked her up. She is working out very, very well!

You could ask for a trial (be prepared for a potential "no") or do a pre purchase exam on him before seeing him if you wanted.

I have bought two horses without seeing them at all (actually I saw 3 pics of each horse prior to purchasing), no pre purchase exam....just had them hauled to me. One I knew the owners a little anyways, but in both cases a close friend had known the horses when they were younger and I just went on that!

I am dealing with the EXACT SAME situation....! I am looking a TB mare that is 5 hrs from me too and I had them send me a video (DVD) of her under saddle first and I'm having my trainer look at it to see what she thinks (I trust her opinion COMPLETELY). So before I commit to traveling that far to see this horse, I want to make sure that my trainer and I like what we see first. A picture can look just great but seeing the animal move may be a different story. And I don't see why someone who really cares for their horse (like they say in the ad "to a perfect") wouldn't agree that if you both don't "click" in 30-90 days or if the vet check doesn't check out, then the owner shouldn't have any problem with that. If there is no problems with the horse and if they care about the horse, then that shouldn't be an issue. But I would make sure YOUR vet checks out the horse if you decide to buy it and bring it home. B/c you don't know the people that are selling it and if that vet is friends with the owners and will tell you the horse is perfectly sound and/ or may not thoroughly check the horse. There are a lot of crooked people out there and you can never be too careful. Good Luck!

P.S. He's GORGEOUS!!!! I'd at least go for it....

Most people will offer a week trial, and ive never seen someone say you couldn't get a vet check..
