Question Bute AND Banamine

Being a horse person gets me in trouble at work... LOL

My mom and I sometimes work the same shifts (she's reception, I'm kennel staff). And sometimes we get horsey clients in who aren't the greatest with meds or are unsure about meds and how to use them. So I sometimes get called over by my mom to see if I can answer a question.

I ALWAYS tell them to get in touch with the vet and that I'm not a vet or certified in any way LOL Just a horse owner that has had to use meds.

This lady has a horse who is lame. Has been perscribed banamine by the vet. But at the same time it's on bute.

The lady was wondering first how much banamine to give her horse (17hh, slender, underweight-ish TB). She didn't know how much the horse weighed. She figured 1000lbs about, I thought the same. But suggested weight tape at the same time.

Her question was if she could give bute in the grain AND give the banamine pretty much right after/shortly after.

I forget how we did it with Mars's dam when she had the really bad thrush that just wouldn't go away and we had the inspection. She was on bute and banamine as well. But I think I gave bute in the PM and banamine in the AM...or I did bute AM and waited a while before going back out to give banamine...

So MY question now is, is it safe to give bute and banamine one after the other? Like it's AM feeding time so I tube the banamine in and then feed them grain with the bute? Would it make more sense to spread the medications out some?

I only used the two at the same time that once instance with Mars's dam. I have given bute maybe 5 times in the 4 years I've owned horses. And banamine has really only been given when Fiona aborted those times and got sick at another time. And the Fiona times it was IV.

Bute and banamine should ONLY be given together (even if 12 hours apart) under strict vet supervision. Combined, they stay in the system longer than the sum of the parts, and doing that for even a short period of time greatly increases the risk of kidney damage.

Definitely dosing these two drugs together should only occur under veterinary supervision. As JBR said, you increase the risk of kidney issues when dosing with both but you also greatly increase the risk of GI ulceration and irritation.

This woman needs to contact her vet and ask if he wants her horse on both drugs or if she should discontinue the Bute and give Banamine.

She should be calling the vet if she has any questions.

devils claw is a natural antiinflam and pain killer with no side affects for long term use, devils claw in liquid is much better,my 32 yr old pony is on this for his arthritis as he gets worse in summer it works brilliantly for him
what kind of injury does her horse have or why is it on this?

If the vet prescribed the banamine, then why wasn't she told the doseage he wanted the horse at? And why wasn't the vet informed of the meds that the horse was already on?

Obviously doesn't answer the question, but those would be the two areas of concern to me if I were talking to the owner.
