| Senior Member+ | Burrs!
The pasture Trav is in this year appears to be surrounded by burrs and Trav LOVES to really dig into the hedgerows for tasty stuff so he's covered with burrs AND is now being treated for a scratch on his eye from the burrs. Would you put a fly mask on him to protect his eyes? Braid his mane and forelock? Also, how safe are break-away halters? I cant get my right arm high enough yet to get a halter on Trav, which means he hasn't been handled but a couple times in 6 weeks. I think I'm starting to feel well enough to play with him some on the ground, but he'd have to be turned out in a halter.

Braiding will help alot, but I think I wouldn't put a fly mask on. The burrs would probably stick all over the mask and possibly irritate him more. Breakaway halters are usually pretty safe, not ideal, but until you heal a little more I think it should be ok, unless he is really bad about getting caught on stuff. Glad you're able to start playing with my buddy Trav again, keep feeling better!

I would braid his mane and forelock. We have burr problems here, too. I don't know about putting a fly mask on. I guess we've had fly masks on our horses and the little tiny burrs get stuck on the fleece parts of the fly masks. I guess if you're REALLY desperate, you could spend the big bucks and get one of these www.guardianmask.com. I have one for my mare, but that's cuz she has uveitis. I wouldn't spend the money unless she constantly got scratched from a burr.

Ive been having the same problem! I braded her tail I cant braid her mane and forlock, for some reason her hair falls out if i braid her mane and leave it in. It might be because i braid it to tight or something. But my poor horses forelock is destroyed! lol I did keep saying i wanted her mane to look natural. Its long now but it still used to look boxy, you could tell it was cut. Well the burs took care of the boxy look. Nothing is the same length anymore:P

Argh; burrs! I just braided/vetwrapped my mares' tails tonight finally. I am now noticing that with their fluffy winter coats, the burrs even stick to their bodies! It was just their manes/tails before. My only solution is daily/nightly removal of them, or else it gets really scary in there.
