well it sounds like you got it figured out but one of our horses who was 15 got an abcess type thing on his neck. it didnt really bother him and it felt like you described until we started rubbing this gel stuff on it to make it soften and drain.

just a thought...it sounds to me like some older mares just get these bumps. Hope its nothing to worry about!!

My friend's mare, who is now 29 years old had a bump that started like that, she remained sound till she was about 27 years old...she is now nearly crippled, with arthritis.....your horse will probably be sound for some time, but may eventually get sore, to the point that you can no longer ride....consult a vet, there are injections, and other supplements that can help...good luck
