Building Back Muscles

What is the best way to build up a horse's back.. After my mare got sick and lost all the weight she lost all the muscle and fat on her back(you can see the ridges in her backbone).. Since she has been on meds she has started gaining weight over her ribs and finally has enough energy to be exercised (she used to stand and watch other horses run.. now she runs them over ) So I was wonder the best way to start her gaining the back muscles. I was thinking about lunging her with side reins, but I wasn't sure if that would even help her back or just her neck.

backing really helps. I make my horses back a lot and it really helped to build up back muscle, and b.utt muscle. When I am done riding, I get off and make them back from the arena all the way to the barn. They actually start to like it because when they get done, they are at the barn and they get to eat.

Starting out small, hill work. Up and down, small tho. Then building your way up. Hill work is always what I have been told. I had this special thing done to my mare. You take a tip of a pen, measure the approx. point of the middle of the horses back, draw a line down with your pen, fingernail, whatever. (so you are still in the middle of the horses body, but now undernearh) Apply pressure upward, not to hard but enough so they pick up there back. It's a good building exersize, I don't do it alot but it's suposto help with collection and stuff. Good luck!

Isn't it? It cost me 60$ to learn that. lol, this lady came and did all this bending exersizes and wierd stuff that I had never heard of doing. Some were bogus, like putting Izzy's rib bak into place, yea like a 120 lbs lady can put at 1,200 lbs horses rib back into place. But I got some good stuff out of it! lol

Ok, well I guess I should say that her back is so bad I won't ride her just yet, I know the saddle would hurt her even with a narrow gullet.. and honestly if I rode bareback.. her back would hurt my bum!
I guess I can start her ground driving again and back her that way.
