Building a tack trunk

What do you guys think of building your own tack trunk? The ones I like cost like $400-$600, so I thought it would be cheaper to build one. Any opinions/tips? I definitley want one with a bandage net and a white board/mirror, and cheaper ones don't have those.

I found a really great website for building tack trunks when I wanted to build my own. Here it is: http://www.elitetackdesign.com/index.html. Yes, you have to pay for the plans, but they are not THAT expensive!

It depends on how handy you are My dad's a finished carpenter -- and anal retentive one at that! He's doing my 2 tack trunks fully custom. Oak outter, cedar lined etc. -- I'm sure it'll end up with something completely off the wall/different when he starts doing it. There's a guy up in Oregon who makes them (I can rummage for his #) and he's only $200ish and shipping isn't bad.

I'm just finishing making mine! Only we made mine out to be a feed bin/ tack trunk for the barn...It's 6' long x 2 ft wide x 3 ft deep...so bigger than what you'd want..but I spent about $200 on the whole thing. it's got a thick plywood floor and back and the front and sides are made out of 1X6 and the lid is a fancier piece of wood. I plan on attaching a net on the inside lid for wraps and pads..if you like that idea you could split the lid 1/2 net and half mirror! I'm getting good at figuring out how to make the most out of the space I've got! Oh...and make sure to build the frame on a solid level surface!

The materials will probably cost more than getting one of these -

I think building your own is a great idea... SOmething wood would be much more elegant than a plastic one!

It all depends on how handy you are though, lol!
