when riding yes...you can start by using a martingale...b/c hes young...and he has a high head set...and he may collect well..but still have his head to high....start by just letting him have some rein...just work on a LOOSE rein...and just trot around...and dont touch him...and he will probably start to strech his head down...and strech out his neck..thats good b/c it is forcing him to learn how to use his back correctly...and you can also...recollect your reins...(still somewhat loose) keep your hands about 2 inchs infront of the pommel of your saddle...and keep them WIDE...and give a little back and forth...gentile...tug...not a yank...not a pull...just so he can feel it...alternate one back and forth...and give a squezze with your leg...that forces him to get up off his forhand...and makes him use his back end...and he will then drop his head...or he should...but also keeping him relaxed will help alot!

oh, lol! I was wondering why going uphills would be bad for his back end. I'm like, wouldn't that help build up his back end? Okay, that makes more sense now!!

ok...lets look at this picture...the horse is moving on the forhand...but his head is low...so once they get going...he will be dragging...but he is a very pretty horse...he is walking but moving out nicly for a walk....his head is at a good place..but she needs to get him working from behind....also look at her hands...thats where your hands should be...but keep them wider (for training purposes) and lower on each side of the neck (b/c hes young..that will direct him into putting his head low)

this horse is working less of the forhand...but also needs some collection...but you dont have to do all of this at once...your horse is young..and this will take time...this horses head is at a pretty good spot...if she were to bring his nose in a bit..he would look nicer (still thogh...she needs to get him to push from behind)

this horse has naturaly works from behind...he has a good forward PUSH from his back end...this is what you want...and you also want your horses front leg to come up right under his chin when troting (now he isnt built like this horse...so i woudnt expect him to be able to reach under his chin...but he may be able too...but you basicly want him to be very extended..yet collected...does that make sense?!

this horse looks good...i think he looks great actually...he is moving very freely...from behind...she doesnt have a tight feel on his mouth which is good..and he is working from behind...and moving out nicely...this is what you what to strive to acheve with Buddy....

*now im no professional...so this is just what i know and what ive been taught...so if im wrong in any way...its my oppsie!!*

Thanks for the picture KT and descriptions! But I'm still seeming to struggle with how you know if they're working from behind or not. Also, so to me it seems like what you were saying in your first post regarding collection and working from behind, that once you get their head in position and lowered, they will have to start working from behind. Is that right? But then you said in some of those pics that their heads look okay, but they're not working from behind.. Just trying to clarify! You seem MUCH more knowledgable than me!

well you are right...that if you get them collected in front properly they have to work from behind...in the pictures...these horses have there heads at a good spot...not to high...but they are still on the forhand...if you look they just sort of look "heavy" in the hand... the first one exspecially looks heavy...and also..if you look at their back...you can see that it is like a downward slope...and then you can see on the last picture it is like an even line... its hard to explan...but it just looks like they are dragging...and then the other two...look more...floaty?! ...can you see it?!! ...im trying to explain...but not doing a good job?!?

Yes, you're doing a wonderful job! And after hearing that desciption I kind of cringed, because now I think Buddy is totally not using the back end! I need some pics of me or someone else riding him so I can see what he does. Or somebody to watch me and tell me what he looks like. Thanks for all your help KT!
