Bud stepped on a concho screw!

My poor Bud...he stepped on the screw protruding from the back of a saddle concho, in the campground at Shimek State Forest on Saturday. It was about an inch and a half long, and went up into the point of the frog and on into the sole. The concho was on the ground...someone must have lost one out of a saddle.

We caught it right away and Doug removed it carefully...then we soaked it in salt water, and put iodine on it and packed the hole with gauze and iodine, and wrapped it with vet wrap & duct tape. I called a vet I know in a town a half hour away and got some antibiotic, but he only prescribed half enough, I found out later.

Anyway, we hoped he would be OK, but was still lame Monday morning, so we called our regular equine vet who wanted us to bring him in. He xrayed, and cored out where the screw went in and found some infection which he removed, then soaked and packed it again, and put a boot on him. We will now be soaking and packing and wrapping his foot every day for a while! He is also on stall rest which is driving him nuts. Our vet prescribed almost three times the antibiotic than the original vet had suggested.

Here he is at the campground: (That's JR behind him.)

Oh Bonnie. I'm sorry to hear that and poor Bud. At least he has you for owners - you guys really take good care of your horses. They are lucky :-)
Have you guys ridden the new trails down there? Do you know about them? And, can you still ride down there?

Oh boy - at least you found it before it did huge damage.

I found a nail in my mares hoof one day. I freaked out and called the vet - it was in my early owning a horse days - vet came out - washed out the dirt and the nail fell out - it was only stuck in the mud - how embarrassing.

Ouch, poor Bud! Hope he's doing better soon. He's a neat color, though! What a pretty boy.

Poor thing, and he is lucky to have such a responsible owner. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

No, we have not ridden the new trails at Kokjohn's yet. The campground is nice! Yes, you can still ride at Shimek...as long as it is not muddy or icy, they keep the trails open. There is a website you can check. I will send it to you later.

Yes, that was fortunate. Poor guy...He had just been out on the trails and did a great job, and picked it up in the campground.

He is already darkening! In the summer he is more tan with the dapples, but in cool weather he darkens a lot.

He is doing better this evening...putting weight on the hoof, so I think we are doing OK. It looked good when we soaked and repacked it.

Thanks!!

My Tucker did the same thing This last Sunday. He ran a piece of wire through the back of his heal. The vet will be out in the morning. To do x-rays.
We will have to compare notes.
Good luck to you and Bud!!
