Question Buckeye/Progressive/Purina

Hello everyone!

I am currently feeding Buckeye Gro-N-Win to a few of my horses. Someone recommended either Progressive or Purina's Born To Win products to me.

Does anyone feed Progressive or Born To Win and can tell me their experience?

Thanks in advance.

We feed Progressive...used to feed Buckeye, but our dealer changed over.

Buckeye and Progressive are almost the same....one of the Buckeye's feed managers (or whatever his title was) got mad when they wouldn't let him reformulate to make a better product, so he left and started his own company -- thus Progressive

I like the results of both...I haven't really seen any difference between the two, but its been awhile since we fed Buckeye.

I don't have any experience with any of these...but as ration balancers go...most everyone is reporting great results and seem to be pleased with all of these products. Each has a slightly different formulation...but for the most part...ration balancers seem to be similar in formulation and address similar needs. I use the Pennfield Balancer Pellets and am very excited with the results that I have gotten.

I use Born to Win and love it. I've never been happier with a manufactured feed product. I've never used another brand of ration balancer to compare it to though. I've got all 3 of my horses on it (1 lb/day). One gets just that. Another gets that plus 1/2 lb BOSS and 1/2 lb rice bran. And another gets that plus 1 1/2 lbs BOSS, 1/2 lb rice bran, and 1 1/2 lbs alfalfa pellets.

I am starting the switch to Born to Win tomorrow (was supposed to be two weeks ago, but the COOP didn't order ).

I am having a hard time deciding what to do with one of my mares. She is currently getting Omegatin (8 lbs/day), and needs a high fat, low NSC diet.

She looks sooo good right now, but Omegatin is sooooooo expensive ($25/40lbs).

I highly recommend doing what Dawn does...it is what I do and after years of all different brands and sorts of feeding programs....adding rice bran, BOSS and perhaps a forage (beet pulp, afalfaf or alfalfa mix cubes or pellets) works well. The rice bran is also expensive...but seems to be more beneficial to feed than other fat sources. It also should only be fed in limited amounts (generally 2 lbs/day). BOSS is 40% fat and provides 2500 cals/lb and no glycemic response. Rice bran also has a low NSC and provides 1500 cals/lb.

From my experience....a vast majority of cases of "hard keepers" is more an overall nutrition issue rather than one of a need for more calories. Yes, more calories are generally needed, but with better nutrition like the ration balancers provide, generally less calories are necessary.

Purina makes Ultium which is designed for hardkeepers. It's an awesome feed and they have a well balanced top dressing called Amplfy that is also for hardkeepers as well. Both are totally awesome products! Check em out online!

My mustang use to be a horrible keeper, and constantly go off her feed. Since switching to this diet (knock on wood), she's doing great. She's the one getting BtW, rice bran, and BOSS.

Not quite. Ultium works well for hard keepers, but was designed for performance horses who needed energy without getting hot.
