broken tree = okay for desensitizing?

Lucy needs totally desensitized to having a saddle put on, taken off, slung around, girthed up, etc. I only have one usable saddle at the moment and that stays with regal at the boarding barn. Is it okay to do this kind of stuff (not ride or put any weight on!!!) with a saddle with a broken tree?

I dont see why not as long as theres not real pressure being put in the stirrups and you have a good pad undearneth! We've used a saddle with a broken tree for training before we sold it!

As long as theres no weight going in the saddle or the stirrups it should be fine.

Nope, no way would I put a broken tree on any horse for any reason.

Trees that are broken are crooked at best, and have parts that poke at worst. Having something crooked on a back can minimally cause the horse to travel crooked. At worst, the horse throws in a buck or kick whirl of some sort, and the broken tree pokes into his back, making him fearful of the very thing you're trying to desensitize him to.

I agree with JB on this one. Broken trees are good for decoration only.

Especially if you're going to girth up. That in itself puts pressure on the horse's back.

No. I wouldnt use a saddle with a broken Tree. You are going to need to be able to do up the saddle. And doing that in itself puts pressure on the saddle and on your horses back. I wouldnt use for any matter. Even just placing it on the horses back i wouldnt do.

Actually can I change my mind? If you are doing more than just putting it on her back (no girth) then it is fine. But if you are doing it up and say lunglig in it then no.

You can find some pretty cheap beat up saddles for under $30 with sound trees. I have found two. One for $25 and the other for $15. The trees are sound. Bothe of them are just well used

See but for even Placing on the back. IF the tree is broken the saddle isnt going to sit right. Even without the cinch done up. The saddle itself still has some weight on it. I wouldnt use it.

Even if you look for a beat up saddle with a good tree, you still MUST make sure that saddle fits that horse, regardless of age. The most common issue is putting a too-narrow saddle on, and that just sets you up for the horse not trusting saddles.
