| Senior Member+ | It definatly depends on the break and the funds you have. It can be extremely pricey to get a horse's broken leg fixed, and they may not be rideable afterwards. My friends horse broke it's leg this year, and unfortunatley the vet said it was in a spot they couldn't cast or fix. The poor mare was put down, she was a beautiful palomino Appendix QH. GREAT barrel horse. My friend was just devastated.

I'd put her/him down if I had a horse that broke a leg. Its next to impossible to set a leg and make it mend correctly.

If its a nice expensive horse worth its weight in gold (and its nit insured) id probably have it fixed but if it was a pretty good horse and was insured id prob go ahead an put em down

It depends on the situation - the break, if it's able to be fixed, if the horse will be able to lead as close to normal life as he did before, if the horse will be in any kind of pain afterwards, funds. Each situation is different and would have to be taken into careful consideration for the well being of the horse.

When I was a kid (20 some years ago) I lost my fav QH gelding to a broken leg. He and his psture mate had free access in and out of the barn and his pasture mate must have kicked him in the foreleg and shattered it. My dad and I had the vet come and look and said we could send him to Cornell U (only 1 1/2 hours away) but there was a chance he would still be lame and unridable. I was devastated but decided to put him down. It was just a freak accident and that does happen. Personally, It would depend on the break, if the animal had value as a broodmare of was going to be put to stud and was not going to be terribly disfigured or lame from the break. I would not let the animal suffer just form my own selfishness and missing my good friend. JMHO

if a horse breaks it's leg, it's fate will be determined by diagnosis and obviously it's owners wishes. some can be set, some can't. a broken leg is not as bad for horses nowadays than it was years ago..
