Broken hoof?**pics added**

When I took Dubies shoes off I expected some brittling at the edges where the nails were always at. Even the farrier said they would be brittle at the edges but would grow out. The edges were kind of jagged a few days after the shoes were removed because of the previous nail holes, now he has a big chunk of hoof on his front left that is protruding out and up. I am going to call the farrier today and talk to him. But is this normal? Hannah said Moseys hoof got this way on one of them long time ago after his was removed.

Yeah, sorta. It's on the inner side and it's twisted up like it was brittle and he maybe scraped it against something. I'll take my old camera out when I feed and see if I can get a piccy.

Do you have a rasp? If so I would take that piece off so he doesn't scra/pe himself with it, sounds like he just took a chunk off by the nail holes, but pics would be helpful.

I do not shoe any of my horses. But we have RMH and a KMSH. They are known to have hard hard feet. But.....when they start to grow out they have a tendency to chip during this dry time of year.

Okay Melissa...excuse #4??? LOL Does this mean you're not coming out this Saturday?

My horses' hoofs always break off here and there. It's really no big deal. Sometimes to me it looks like a HUGE chunk. But I am told it's nothing, really.

But, BTW, I am going to be shoeing Hope the next time the farrier comes out. She's getting very ouchy going over the rocks. So, you might want to reconsider pulling Dubie's shoes altogether.

Yes, that is normal, just go ahead and peel or cut if off.

okay, here are pics now. The loose flappy part broke off and this is what it looks like. They have gotten ragged since the farrier was out.

C'mon Robin! That's a lame excuse. I would be more creative than that! Like Dubie is participating in the Mars expedition that Saturday!

Yep, just the nail holes breaking off, looks worse than it is. You can file those rough edges with a rasp a little to prevent further chipping and breakage.

I would say that is no big deal. My horse has never had shoes and that happens to him if i don't get him trimed on time. He has never come up lame from it and it never seems to bother him. After a while the rest tends to chip down to the right length too. Unless he is lame I wouldn't worry about it. Altho you might not want to ride him to hard for a little while.
