| Senior Member+ | Sultan's time has come. Yes....this horse MUST be ridden!!!Lol. He has been out of work(NO work at all) all winter. So about 3 months or more. He was so fat he was on the verge of founder. Now that we have a strict diet planned out,hes on his way to becoming healthy again. I've taken on the job of lunging him about 3-4 times a week. I started him off yesterday with just 10 minutes of mostly walking and a little bit of trotting. I worked him on a large curvy circle. He was very good(he's a lovely little mover). I know everyone gave me advice on how to bring Moth back in,but he is alot different. Hes not as 'willing' as Moth. He is too unsafe to ride at the moment,so i can only lunge. He gets tired and grumpy very easily and when he does,he usually ends up being a sutbborn little so and so. So i need nice excercises to help him come back into work.I want to do it slowly and properly so i don't make him sour. Any suggestions would be great

| Senior Moderator | Keep doing what you are doing. Slow lunging work, if you have a round pen working him at liberty might be a little bit easier on you. I am guessing is grouchy because he is out of shape, on a diet and sore. If he was close to founder, he probably has a lot of toxins running through his system which is adding to the soreness. Just keep doing ground work and he'll start to come around.

| Senior Moderator | Sounds like he was just taught how to get out of things, those are the ones that are very hard to deal with! Good luck!

| Full Member | I agree with shot gun that round pen free lungeing is easier on you and you can get more done. Instead of looking at his lungeing seesions as "work" look at them as training. Teach him to respect your space, to change his speed at one gait, to look at you when you ask him to, to turn towards the rail, or towards you on command, etc. He should think this is fun in moderation. This way he looks forward to his conditioning sessions with you because you're going to play a game with him! Good luck and updates would be great! |

Find a small hill and lunge him up and down. Pony him if you can on a easy trail ride. Mix it up and keep him interested in getting into good shape. Take it slow, don't forget to give him a good rub down before and after. I hope this helps. |
