Brindle

I was looking at my USEF magazine today and saw a new stallion in there his name is Natal. Have ya'll ever seen him? He's a mahogany bay brindle. I had never seen one! He's really awesome looking! I tried to find pictures on the web but the site isn't up yet. Anyone else have any brindle horses? What crosses get a brindle. I think that's the most bizarre thing I have ever seen!

Natal is one of the most famous Brindles around. It's not well known yet what causes it or how it's inherited, but it IS pretty cool!

I LOVE brindles! They're so gorgeous! There's a stallion called Dunbar's Gold-he's a buckskin brindle. SOOO pretty!

On other boards, a LOT of people have been asking for pictures of Natal's foals as they are advertising him as "100%" colour (brindle) production, but so far, no one has seen pictures of any of these foals.

My understanding of brindle (and it IS limited) is that it is a VERY hit and miss type of gene. Take Catch A Bird. Over 10++ years of breeding, he has yet to produce one single brindle foal, and his is a very strong colour pattern. I dont think they (the genetisists) quite know if you need to breed brindle to brindle to get brindle foals or ???

My Faux Finish yearling filly has brindling down one shoulder. It started off when she was born as a 2-3 inch of discoloured hair and now it has really grown and is stretching right from her withers down to her elbow.
Here's a picture of it, but you really cant see it as clearly as it shows up on her in her summer coat:

So - I wonder with her if it will literally start to spread each and every year???

Its actually quite aggravating ... ... its large enough to be noticeable and small enough that it looks like I did a crummy cleanup job on her!

In future years, I'd love to see if she does pass on her brindling to future foals as well ...

That is very interesting do you think it could be afactor of the dun gene. It seems alot of the pictures I have seen have been duns. Just a thought...

Here is another website that talks about brindle horses and the dun factor. It has some good pictures too:
http://www.elcascabel.com/brindles.html

There is a book called Riding Lessons by Sara Gruen about a brindle horse, it's a really neat book.
