Oh I have never heard of the "ear tip" - cool

I usually just cut enough for the bridle or head collar - about 3" ---- *makes mental note to try ear measurement*

Hmm...Good Question. I usually do just enough for the halter. and just a bit more for room.

Course I also Scissor cut it too. So I try to keep it as small as possible!! ROFLMAO

The length of the area you clip should depend on what is needed to enhance and improve your horse's appearance. Some horse's look better with a longer area clipped some shorter. There actually is no set length even though you hear the "length of the ear" often.
The length clipped can vary on horses that have manes that are braided or banded since the braids and banded sections are used to make the horse's neck appear longer or shorter. Naturally, if you need more hair for this purpose you clip off less.
On horse's that are shown with the mane long and unbraided, the hair is usually clipped to enhance the neck, but also refine the throatlatch. Less bulk, as in this case hair, on the neck over this area create the illusion of "thinness" and a trimmer neck and throat. The eye automatically moves past the clipped area on to the long mane.
So how much mane behind the horse's ears and how long the area you clip really depends on what you need to do to enhance and improve your horse's appearance.

i have a couple of books just on grooming and some on mane and tails... i looked in one and it claimed that for western pleasure the mane is "pulled to 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches. 6-8 inch bridle path Mane usually falls on left. Long, natural mane optional. Forelock sometimes braided. Pulled mane may be banded. Roached manes now out of fashion.. Sry i typed the whole thing on manes. I dunno if that is correct or not i do hunter/jumper stuff lol

6-8 inch on stock breeds? I just have a hard time imagining that.

Saddle type horses are WAY different than Stock type horses.... Arabs, morgans, saddlbreds because of their head carriage, and the arch they "outline" they buzz back more of the path than stock breeds do. The long straight flat line is only about an ear's length.

Good luck!!!
