Breeding Unregistered Mares...

If you had a mare that had great conformation, good disposition, and was breeding material, but for some reason or another lacked papers, would you breed her? What if you could possibly produce a foal that could be registered? (i.e. paint to paint for a pinto foal)

If the mare was outstanding, then yes, I would. I would be more interested in breeding her to the best possible stallion and the ability to register the foal in some color registry would be secondary.

This is a tricky subject...

I think there are times that breeding an unregistered mare could be an okay thing to do. However unregistered and unknown are two different things.

The pedigree on some unregistered horses is sometimes known. That would be a positive. If you don't know the pedigree of the horses then there are a lot of tests that would need to be done for certain things like HYPP, HERDA, LWO, etc...

To make it worthwile to run the necessary genetic tests the mare would have to be something very unique, tallented (massively successful in something), excellent conformation, great temperment, etc. Then I would only breed to a stallion that allowed the foal to be registered.

It depends what your goals are for the breeding, expectitations and desires for the foal and so many other factors to consider. Just basing it on conformation, temperment and pedigree (or lack there of) is not looking at the whole picture.

I myself don't understand what the big deal with being "Purebred" has to do with it. As far as I am concerned there are LOTS of foals out there with no papers and they are still beautiful horses. The only differance I see in purebred is the PRICE $$$$$ TAG. I have seen foals for sale at $10,000 and people will pay this on the CHANCE this horse will grow up to be a WINNER in whatever sport you chose. I myself think that is crazy.

^ Sorry as flat as the market is ... this is just not true. Many very very well papered horses can now be bought for less than or equal to the stud fee. IMHO there is no reason to breed and unknown mare to an unknown stallion. MONEY is no longer an answer! Sorry you will have to give me a better excuse.

What about the responsibility of breeders to not breed genetic defects if at all possible? If you have no knowledge of the horses pedigree it is much more difficult to make a responsible decision.

Also, there are plenty of purebred/papered babies out there selling for nothing! Even responsible breeders who are producing great foals are not getting much for their babies.

If I had a unregistered mare and she was outstanding at something (say Roping) . You bet I would. But I would be breeding her to keep the foal. But if it was just breeding her to have a baby and get rid of it then No Way.
