Breeding Rescued/Adopted Horses?

I have been reading on a couple of forums how people have "rescued a mare" then want to breed her. Isnt there a clause in adopting a horse that you will not breed them? Adding another life to an already over populated world of unwanted horses doesnt seem right when you can adopt baby horses as well.

I am quite involved in the local dog and cat adoption here in Prescott. Now with dogs and cats they are not even adopted out until they are spayed or neutered.

I just wondered what the general rule is about adopting a horse for breeding purposes?

Cant mares be spayed (for the lack of the proper word)?

Maybe this is too expensive or just not practical but I jut wanted to see everyones thoughts on this.

That is up to the individual rescues. There is no "Standard of policy" among the rescues, which is a crying shame.

Yes, mares can be spayed...however, depending on the vet, it can be a costly, and very invasive procedure.

There are less costly, and invasive procedures, but you have to find a vet to do that. And even at that, rescues are having issues feeding their crew, let alone finding the funds to spay/geld a horse.

Mares aren't like dogs, they don't get a lot of uterine infections. Dogs do, probably because of an increase of inbreeding? (one theory I was told).

All horse owners have to do is wake up and smell the coffee. Just because your mare is cute, cuddly, and has a repro tract that works...doesn't mean BREED.
