| Senior Member+ | Breeding questions? My friend is thinking about buying a SB. She has never raced so that the appeal for her as she already had a SB gelding. This mare is only 4-5years old. Great confo for the breed, nice temperment. 15hh. Before i ask just remember this isnt for me, my friend is just running this idea through her head and wants to no some facts, so please just help! She is thinking about breeding her. so comes to her questions that i could not answer as ive never done this before.... a) How old should a mare be before you put her in foal? b) A mare that has never been in foal before how many vet bill would be expected? c) To have a good riding horse pref not gainted what should she look for in a stallion. (wanting something not as chunky, to be used in english disp.) If you could help it would be great thanks

| Senior Member+ | Honestly, at this moment...she shouldn't worry about breeding her. Encourage her to get to know the horse, learn the horses performance abilities, temperment, full evaluation top to bottom of faults and issues that will possibly be passed to any future foal. Especially since she doesn't even own the horse yet. As for the questions. a) How old should a mare be before you put her in foal? Older than 3 to breed. Preferrably after several successful show seasons as when you do put her into foal, you do want to limit the show season tremendously for optimal health of both mare and foal. b) A mare that has never been in foal before how many vet bill would be expected? Well, lets see....repro exam can run anywhere from a few hundred bucks to a few thousand bucks. Depending on what was found, infection or issues that can be corrected, etc. If she is to be AI, then you have those fees that can run around the same, depending on the vets rate. A hundred here, a hundred there for pregnancy exams with or without ultrasounds When the baby is born, if uncomplicated, a few hundred for full exam of baby and momma.....with complications.....may drop some of us into bankruptcy. c) To have a good riding horse pref not gainted what should she look for in a stallion. (wanting something not as chunky, to be used in english disp.) She doesn't want gaited...so look for stallions that aren't gaited. Excellent conformation, performance record, and performance babies. A stud can be the best at performance, but may not throw the ability to do anything. So look to the babies as well.
