I believe they are in their prime at 6 and 7 (correct me if i'm wrong) and you are perfectly fine at breeding a maiden mare at this age. I think when people start to get worried about breeding maiden mares are when they are getting into the ages of 15 and older.

It depends on the mare. I have heard of cases of maidens being as old as 20+, others would not take without serious hormonal therapy. Breeding a 2 yr old is like our teens getting pregnant. Still growing, still learning, really SHOULDN"T be pregnant physically! let alone mentally.

I was always told to wait until mare turns four before you breed her...that way she is fully developed.
