| Full Member | Breeding Opinions
Hey everyone.. just wanted to know everyone's opinions on breeding. As most know, the Jockey Club won't allow anything that is artificially inseminated. Do the members in here agree with this or do you think they should allow semen to be shipped out? If you agree with it, do you think that Quarter Horse should switch to that way of breeding as well?? Are there any other breeds that have those kinds of stipulations when it comes to breeding??

Quarter Horse HAS changed their rules. They allow AI, Live, ET, and any other way that breeding can occur, with or without help.

The reason that TB's haven't jumped on the band wagon is because they don't want the field FULL of Stormcat babies and nothing else. Since a stallion cannot breed more than he can breed. AI's allow for more mares in one shot. I agree with the live cover for that reason.

Nope...I don't think the quarter horse should, because we have diluted it so much, the chances that 5 siblings go against each other in the same competition is very rare. Because competitions span across the nation.....unlike racing that have specific tracks people want to compete at with those lines.

I agree, live cover will keep us from getting only one gene pool from exploding, but then AI, for someone who cannot afford to ship their mare to the stallion, is a good thing. I would like to breed my mare to a black and white paint, who would gaurentee that I would get a black and white foal, and AI would be my only option.

AI has its good and bad points. there are so few high quality trotting sires (i think i can count all of them on my hands) that we are beginning to inbreed and the foals we are having arent of the quality they should be. i agree with live cover for this reason. AI makes it so that high quality mares who are a thousand miles away can be bred w/o shipping and board costs...thats why i like it. i grew up w/ standardbreds and its all (well 99.9%) done AI, but im starting to realize the problems.

AI keeps the stallion safe. The stud I bred my mare to is still incompetition so he does not do live cover, only AI. Since he's in competition his owner doesn't want him getting hurt in anyway while breeding. Which makes sense to me. BBJ

I voted that It dosen't matter, but that is becasue I like both live cover and AI. AI allows a breeder of rare horses or breeders who live in remote locations with no quality studs nearby, to breed to quality horses all the way across the country from them. AI also helps protct not only the stallion, but the mare as well. But I like live cover because it helps limit the number of mares bred each year. So I'm on the fence on this one. I've needed to use AI because there are not many quality Appaloosa stallions in my area so I've bred to an Appaloosa stallion in Oregon.
