Breeding mares and stallions

What kind of cleansers do you use to wash your mare or stallion with before breeding? Do you just use a mild soap and water solution, or is the a mixture you buy?

Clean warm water will do the job.....I would not use any detergents...it has been proven that "the continued use of soap or other cleansing agents may in fact prove detrimental because it removes the natural anti-bacterial flora." Also use cotton instead of a sponge and never put any cotton back in the bucket after it has touched the stallion or mare.

Soap can kill sperm, so water only is what I have seen used.

and the other thing - as well as not using soap - ever - is that water is a spermicide as well, so after the stallon is washed, he is "patted" dry with paper towels to dry him off as much as possible before we collect him or Live Cover a mare

So basically, you just use warm water and some cotton "wipes" (I am guessing those big, fluffly soft squares you can get in the make-up section maybe?) and just wipe him and her both down really good? And afterward dry with paper towels?

Most books, etc. I have read are very vague about how to clean, OR at a lot more complex. I did not realize soap could cause problems; makes sense, but never thought about it before. My former trainer uses mild Dawn to wash her studs and mares down for breeding.

We just buy paper towel in bulk - like those kinds you can get at COSCO or Sam's that they use for filling the dispensers up with - the individual sheets

And warm water

I will use something like Excalibur for a cleaning when he is not breeding, but the daily pre-breeding ritual is water only and then patted dry

hmm, well I learned something new!

Shell- thanks for adding that soap can act as a spermacide... I did not know that.
