breeding for spots

What color stallion, when bred to an unregistered, leopard mare will most likely throw a spotted foal? I know this is a very vague question, but I really have nothing else to go on as the mares are grade and no one knows their breeding. Asking this question for a friend.

Also, are the chances of getting a spotted foal better if you breed leopard app to leopard app.

What if both of the leopard apps are unregistered? Still the same?

Registration has nothing to do with the horse's chances of producing a coloured foal. A few spot leopard is almost 100% guaranteed to produce colour.
Being a leopard, the mare you're talking about has a good chance of producing colour even bred to a solid. If you want to have the highest odds possible go with a stallion that is either few spot leopard, leopard, or blanketed (in that order).

if you bred a heterozygous horse to another heterozygous horse then the chance will ALWAYS be 50%. (all leopard spotted horses are considerd heterozygous at this time) If you breed a heterozygous horse to a homozygous horse the chance will always be 100%. IF you want GUARANTEED production then look for a few spot leopard stallion to breed to your leopard appaloosa mare. Then you have a 50 % chance of a spotted foal (heterosygous) and a 50% chance for getting a homozygous foal. (few spot or snow cap)

registration status DOES NOT make a difference in this case.

I would personally go with a snowcap stallion or a few spot, like mentioned above. You can always ask the stallion owners what their color throwing percentage is as well. remember though, in appy's, there is no color guarantee!! always a surprise!! I know Eastern Riker, an old appy stallion who is now deceased, was actually out of 2 solid registered quarter horses, he was born loud colored!!

Eastern Riker has the exact same type of pedigree as almost ALL the other supposed "Crop out" appaloosas in that he carries Roan Handcock and Peter Mccue lines. A fact that many QH people don't what revealed is that the early AQHA allowed minimally spotted appaloosas to be registered as AQHA horses. So some where along the line the Quarter horse is descended FROM the Appaloosa. The appaloosa is NOT a QH with spots as some would have you believe.

your better of breeding to something that you know throws color. it's doesn't matter if a horse is registered or not to was it throws. my old appaloosa his dad was a leopard and his mom was a grade mare and well he turn out to be a solid black grade appaloosa. plus even if you do breed for color your not always going to get color, unless to breed to somthing that is homozgus.

I've looked at this thread several times now and haven't responded....I just want to mention; Don't let someone talk you into a stud just for his color...for your own sake make sure he also has the confirmation, temperment, health, etc. that you want as well. Good luck in your search!
