Question Breeding Cremellos

I have a 5 year old cremello filly that has never been bred. I want a buckskin paint foal. What color horse would I have to breed her to get that color? A homozygous bay piant???

Yes a bay would be where you would start. Can you post photos of her and tell us more about her and why you want to breed her? What are her weaknesses and her strengths? How's she bred, etc?

I'll let those more experienced discuss her attributes and such.

On the topic of color only, though, to guarantee a buckskin pinto foal from her you would have to breed to a stud that was homozygous black, homozygous agouti, and homozygous tobiano.

as soon as i can upload photos of her then yes, i will upload photos of her. I want to breed her because I want a baby that I can start from scratch and just be trained my way so I will know everything about it. I am not sure how shes bred. I do not have papers on her.

So she's not registered?

Why not just buy a weanling? That's pretty much from scratch [if you buy at like 3 months or 4 months, depending on when they wean].

Agreed with Jess and you help a little to control the overpopulation problem. Also, to breed for color is not right either, you should be breeding for dispositon and conformation etc. if you feel you have to breed.

Agree on the dont breed her. But if she is homozygous for agouti herself, you only need a homozygous black homozygous tobiano stallion. Agouti wont matter on the stud if she is homozygous.

Yep thats a great idea Buy a cute little buckskin filly or colt, you can get them pretty cheap, cheaper than a breeding

Also breeding JUST for color is not a reason to breed. Breeding, for color, confirmation, bloodlines, personality, disapline etc.... thats a reason to breed.

We have some great color breeders on here, talk to one of them, they would be able to help you find the perfect foal. Or help you in your breeding choice if thats forsure what you want to do

Is she not registered because papers were lost or because she was always grade? Before you go considering breeding her (we've all wanted a nice foal from one of our own to raise) look at some of the threads on here about the work and disappointments involved with breeding.. .from not getting semen in time for those who shipped semen, to mares not settling that were bred AI or Live Cover, mares and foals lost to one thing or another. With the cost of feed up the way it is, we've cut back from having over 20 breeding animals at our place to TWO broodmares bred (at most) per year of our own. Where it used to cost me around $500 to get a foal on the ground above and beyond what the normal upkeep was on a mare, it's almost doubled that.

Truth of the matter is that color does sell (and you should always assume you'll have to sell the foal one day and pray you can always keep it), but push come to shove, people as a whole rather have a good registered foal, even in geldings.

I agree 100%. The first thing to always look at before you breed is "is this mare registered?" if the answer is no, then don't breed. You can buy a yung foal for pretty cheap, and that way you could be picky about color, bloodlines, and all that stuff. If you want a really young foal check out Last Chance Corral. They rescue nursemare foals, you can adopt them as young as a few weeks.
