breeding age

i recently adopted a 22yr old pasb arabian mare. the vet said she is okay to breed this year. she was a rescue and is underweight. he said around july or august. when her weight will be back. she is great and her babies that i have found thru the arabian horse association are all proven show horses and athletes. but i don't about breeding her this late in life. some arab breeders say they breed into the late twenties. but i don't know. can anyone give me some ideas. here is a pic of her and my daughter today posing for the camera.

It really depends on the horse, and only your vet can tell you. Though, at her age, if your vet says yes I would probably get a second opinion just in case. Also, if she can in fact be bred, I would wait until next breeding season because July or August is pretty late to be bred....

Oh, she sure looks Polish! (I personally LOVE Polish Arabs...no offense to you Egyptian fans.)

Has she been having babies consistently or has it been years since her last foaling? That's the key--if it's been more than a year or so, have your vet do a full repro exam. Also, older mares tend to start their summer heat cycles later than younger mares, so she'll probably be "breedable" (if that's a word) through the end of summer or even September. I think the question comes down to whether you'd want to potentially risk her health to have a baby out of her.

BTW, what's her pedigree look like?

Wow, Kim, is it just me or does she totally remind you of Image?

her sire is alarm and her dam is zasadzka. she is line bred however which is good or bad depending on how you stand on the purity issue. can't find any info on her parents.

She looks remarkably like my Arab mare, who's got a lot of Polish in her...and is also line-bred (in multiple places). Line breeding has its pros and cons, as I'm sure you know.

I recognize Negatiw, Witraz, Comet, and Naborr, but those are a bit back on her pedigree. (I used to be real into Arab bloodlines about 15 years ago, but then I lost track!)

Here's a fun site of some Arab foundation sires with photos:

I'll also PM you with another site to check out.

thanks neighneigh! that websit you posted had two of the stallions in her pedigree. i guess i should be happy that she happens to be line bred with witraz since he sired bask. a very popular name now a days. maybe her pedigree is why the vet said to breed her. she is great and will be fantastic when she is all healthy again. thanks again it really helped.

once your mare is healthy and in good condition then she should have no troubles with breeding, a bonus would be that she is a proven breeder. Horses can be bred wel into there twenties, but of course there is more risk.
