breathing hard and not sweating

Last time I rode Sammy (the horse I'm interested in buying) he came in from the pasture breathing hard. His breathing sounded normal (no rasping or anything, so I don't think he was having trouble breathing) except that it was really fast. It pretty much sounded like he'd been running around. Then while I was riding, he was still breathing like that and he also wasn't sweating. He should have been sweating, because it was really hot out, but he wasn't.

Don't worry, I didn't ride him for that long. Then I walked him around a whole bunch and hosed him off really well.

I'm thinking this was just a one-time thing because it was so hot and maybe he wasn't drinking enough water (wouldn't that cause this?), because he was fine the first time I rode him. Also, Sugar did the same thing once, but she was fine the next time I rode her.

Would putting electrolytes in his water to get him to drink more water help with this? Or could there be another reason for this besides the heat?

He probably has Anhydrosis. Some horses with this condition will not show signs until it hits a certain temperature. It is a very dangerous disease, and do not reccommend buying a horse with the condition. Sometimes, though, the absence of sweat could point to a problem with the thyroid. Before buying, have his levels tested, and tell the vet that you are concerned about this, he can give you a better diagnosis.

Anhidrosis is definitely a possibility and if you are planning on using this horse for anything that would require riding during hot weather, then he's probably not a good choice. Non-sweaters require special care as their body's mechanism for maintaining a normal body temperature during hot conditions doesn't function and their body temperature can spike dramatically. These horses do much better in cooler and less humid climates. In hot/humid climates they often cannot be used during the hot months due to the possibility of them suffering heat stress or heat stroke. The use of misters, fans, frequent cool baths during the heat of the day and even air-conditioned stalls are options for helping to keep these horses from over-heating. They also often do not eat well during hot weather which can cause weight loss and predispose them to GI ulcers.

My boss own's a non-sweater that lives at the clinic and we treat many of our client's horses for non-sweating here in Texas.

Ventopulmin (a bronchiodilator) has also been used with some success on non sweating horses, but it is a steroid and is on the controlled medication list, so discuss with your vet the viability of using this product on this horse

Good luck!

Yea, it sounds like he might have Anhydrosis. Try using OneAC, its a powder supplement that has had some amazing results with horses who dont sweat. If you dont buy this horse...make sure the owner is aware of this problem. If he gets too overheated it could be fatal : ( Hope all goes well.

He could be a non sweater having heaves. Something like Let M Sweat or AC one works for that no oils add salts and electrolytes. I would have him vet check if I was thinking of buying him. If it's not being a non sweater then there could be other issue and I would have him probed.
