breat collars

Can any horse use a breat collar? I got a breat collar with my saddle (it was like a saddle set) and didn't know if i could use it or not. Does it do any harm? Whats the purpose exactly?

They're usually used to keep the saddle from slipping back, or if you use a tie down or something like that, they hold the strap close to the horse's chest so he won't trip on it.

You can use it, I think they look good on horses!!

The only time it can do harm is if it is not sized correctly to the horse. If it is not positioned well it will interfer with shoulder movement. I don't know if you ride English or Western, but either way breast collars belong on the D rings, not connected to the ring your chinch is on (for a western saddle)

I personally like how breast collars look.

i like how they look too. I would have my trainer look at it first as I dont want her to get sores from it rubbing or anything. I may put it on to see how it looks, but thats about it. Thanks guys!

I use them. I feel like they give me more security. Timed event riders and ropers use them all the time.

Their original purpose was to keep the saddle from flipping over if the front cinch broke. They were designed to be used in conjunction with a back cinch. If the front girth/cinch broke and the rear one held, the saddle will not come off.

Is breast a star-ed out word? We know that they're breast-collars, and not breat collars, right?

I use one with my mare, as my saddle tends to slip back. I made sure that I had help adjusting it (and asked more than one person until I felt like I had enough knowledge about it). I like how it fits my mare, and I like how I feel more secure with it, knowing that my saddle isn't going to slip around a lot.

However, I don't like to use them just for the sake of using them. That's just more equipment to deal with when you're tacking up and untacking. It's just money that you spend that you don't need to. It's just time that you waste when you don't need to. But, I'm a minimalist when it comes to equipment for my horses. If I need it, I get it, but if I don't need it, then I don't spend money on it. Otherwise, I'd be thousands in debt

I don't ride western too often, but when I do I like to use a breast collar especially if i'm doing some REALLY heavy duty trail riding especially when I'm riding up and down very steep hills.

Wow, I never knew that. I always thought they were just to keep the saddle from slipping back. Learn something new everyday!!
