They are used to keep your saddle from slipping back. Mostly used on horses with low withers and flat backs. Sometimes they are used just for looks.

A breast plate is not actually used to keep a saddle from sliding back. Its real purpose is to stop the saddle from rolling under the horse should the girth become too loose, or break. Many people do, however, use them just for looks. wink

Pro...I"ve always been told it is to keep the saddle from sliding back, IF used properly. Unless you have a back girth attached, the function of it turning doesn't work very well. Our girth broke and my husband landed in FRONT of the horse because of the breast plate. He learned after that to make sure the back girth is attached instead of being lazy and not putting it on.

Breast Plates The breastplate is used to keep your saddle from sliding back. It does this by anchoring around the horses neck and chest. Australian Breastplates The stockmans breastplate is an important accessory for your australian saddle. It will help stop your saddle sliding backwards if riding in steep and hilly terain and will also help stop the saddle moving side to side. Both inserts found on the internet [ April 30, 2004, 08:16 AM: Message edited by: AQHA1972 ] |

A lot of people that trail ride use them. It helps to keep everything where it belongs when climbing hills. It is especially useful on racking horses since their natural way of going is somewhat up hill. In western show classes they use them simply as ornimentation (for looks). It used to be required tack(at least in the arab world), along with hobbles and a riatta (ok so I'm dating myself). It is important that when using a breast collar for the purpose it was intended, that it be a good and well made breast collar and that it be fitted properly. If not it could cause problems, rubbing or injury to the horse. Trail riders also use cruppers (the piece that goes from the back of the saddle to under the horses tail, like on a driving harness), this keeps the saddle from ending up on your horses neck when going down hill.

I don't understand either. Are you talking about the head carriage? He carries his head too high?

Every horsemanship clinic that I have been to stressed the myth of breast collars keeping the saddle from slipping back. They all said that id was used to keep the saddle from going completely under the horse. It saves the saddle, and the horse. If your girth broke, and the saddle ended up in front of the horse, instead of under, then your breast collar did its job! wink
