Breast Collar Fit

My big OTTB gelding is a tall 17 hh, and compared to my mare who is also an OTTB, he is long through the body.

I have a lightweight cordura saddle with matching breast collar. The breast collar came with a strap for each side to attach to the rings on the saddle. This single strap does NOT reach, so I had to also use the ones that came with my daughter's saddle. This makes the collar very loose. Both straps are in the tightest holes & are still not working well. For his comfort of course I would rather have it a little too loose than too tight. In the many times he has worn it, a soggy fit never seemed an issue with him.

The other night he was bucking & rearing while being lunged tacked up, and I am almost positive it was due to trying a new saddle pad. He has very high withers and I think he was telling me the pad was uncomfortable. During this melee, the small piece of material holding the saddle ring came loose & there he stood with one side of the breast collar hanging on the ground.

Now I want to make wearing this piece of equipment as comfortable for him as possible. What else can I use to attach it to the saddle ? These straps are nothing more than a 1/2" wide nylon strip with belt holes in them. One strangles him & 2 makes it droopy.

Suggestions would be very much appreciated......

well i kind made a western breastcollar into a english for my arab.i took an old throatlatch off an extra bridle and put it through the d rings of the breastcollar.(where the straps are attached)it went through both and sat on top of his withers to pull the whole thing up so it didn't just drop down to low.i hope this helps!

Go in to a tack shop and have them make you a strap that's the right length, probably cheap.
