Thumbs up Branding Part 2

OMG The branding was SO much fun!! There were 15 people to do 200 calves, but it only took us 3 hours. We had 4 guys roping and dragging calves, and us 3 girls did all the ear tagging and giving the shots. The calves are ear tagged to match their mamas at birth, but then we have to put another tag in their other ear for the Canadian Identification thingie for mad cow (new legislation now). They're just a yellow circle with serial numbers on them. Brad got to be a calf wrestler (throw them down and sit on them LOL).

The Coriente babies don't get the big floppy tags with numbers to match their mamas because they are used for calf roping and they might get ripped out. Also, their horns are not removed as they will be used for team roping when they are older. When their horns come in though they will get casted to prevent rope burn, and it's cheaper than buying the head gear for them.

So anyways the 4 guys would rope a calf from the bunch (we separated them from their mamas) by they heels and drag them close to the fire where 2 guys would jump on them to hold them down. One guy sits on their head and one on their bum, holding thier legs. They then get branded, dehorned and Josee would jump in and give them their needle and I would punch the tag in their ear. And if their male they get rubber banded. It's all over in about a minute and the calves are up and running again. We were doing 2-4 at a time with all the help, it was great!

Afterwards Josee's mom made us a huge supper of roast beef, potatoes, beans, salad, buns, etc...which was awesome and then we just sat around and drank all night LOL I only had a few, being one of the few females there. It was great though because Josee's dad used to ride saddle bronc with my dad and he had a bunch of friends there that are buddies with my dad so we got to all catch up. It was lots of fun!

And for those who say rodeo cowboys aren't real cowboys, I'd just like to point out that every single person there helping and the ranchers themselves ALL rodeo or used to rodeo (aged now LOL). Most of them professionally. So there. LOL

I wish we could have got pics too, but I was so busy running around trying to tag everything!! I accidently tagged 2 of the 50 Corientes But they need to be tagged eventually anyways, they were just going to wait until after rodeo season when they aren't being used for calf roping anymore. But they were just the Canadian ID tags that are small circles, not dangly, so they hopefully won't get ripped off.
