Bran Mash, is it enough?

Is Bran mash 1x time a week enough to keep them sand free? We use wheat bran, they get 1 scoop (I know this doesnt tell you much but I dont mesasure my bran besides it probably is so light its unregisterable) of it with added water to make it on the sloppy side.

We feed a Wheat Bran mash meal every night, during the winter. Our horses seem to be doing quite well. We also add way more water than bran, they only get 2 mugs of bran, in a big (bigger than a gallon) container of warm water.

Everynight? Do you give them grain also or just the bran?

Yes, they also get a grain in a evening. Well, Blaze get his Pro Advantage grain in the morning and night, he gets almost a half of a scoop (like that red one above) AM & PM. Along with a mug full of rolled barley in AM & PM. Then in the PM, the two older horses get, Complete Advantage, and a half a scoop of that. And then I just pour the bran in, after they are done with their grain, and then gobble it up. Blaze loves to dip his hay in the barn. LOL

P.s- I don't think horses would get tried of the bran, if you fed that much. They never get tried of the same old hay everyday. lol.

Ours too. At first they didn't want to try it, but they warm up to the idea, and then they are hooked on the stuff.

Wheat bran does absolutely nothing for sand. Wheat bran is harmless and useless at best, and at worst causes a mild digestive upset when fed occasionally.

To deal with sand, use either flax on a regular basis (whole flax, not ground) or something with phsyllium.

Or just adequate forage---hay, pasture. Forage has been shown to be as effective as psyllium to move sand through the gut. So, free choice forage would be a good way to go since it's also good for preventing ulcers and maintaining overall digestive health.
