We bran mash our horses once weekly. Today, when I went out to give the horses their monthly dose of Sand Clear, I began to wonder if there is any problem with a horse on a bran mash program getting sand clear. Does anyone have an idea on this??

Is it a big problem, the sand issue in US. I have read about Sand Colic in worming leaflets in Uk, but it isn't a major problem, is their a lot of sand in your pastures, please let me know as much as possible. Very interested Thanks Jane |

Thanks for the info Spyro. Now I can relax. Hi Jane. This is really more of an issue for people who live in the Southwest US but due to the insanely low temps here lately, we have had to do all of our turnouts in the sand floored indoor arena. The stallion stays out all night and we even throw a little hay to him in there. I am paranoid, I know, but it makes me feel better to go ahead with the sand clear while they are exposed to sand so much and are very likely to ingest a good bit of it. |

Gotta ya Aimee, I had a feeling it might be something like that. When I see the photos on the site, a lot of horses are in pens with what looks like sand on the floor(another difference across the pond the only time horses in general see sand in UK, is either on the beach rides(fantastic on holiday for me Would be different for people who live near the coast I would imagine, in UK i mean. Thanks for that. Remember the Bran thing with the lami pony - Chaff would be better. Jane |

jane, sand is an ever lasting problem down here in FL...we call it the sand pit...LOL The horse's ingest the sand through hay, grass, etc and then it settles in the bottom of the intestines. Because it is heavy, it can't be passed out through the manure in a normal fashion. It needs some help, psyllium, which is the base of all your sand clearing products, actually gels up and lifts the sand so that it can be passed out. Sand can cause impactions, and in the first stages of it, diareah (however the heck you spell the *runs*!!) is one of the first symptoms. It is next to impossible to keep horses totally off the sand down here in FL, so we have to really watch their stools, give them preventatives, etc. Not much fun, kind of weird, over there where you are Jane, you worry about too rich of grass, over here, we worry about sand....

Yeh Spyro, Bang on. I think Pic would do better over with you I know Sand Colic is a problem here, but no where near like it is for you. I have never in all my years, ever know one with sand colic, sounds like you said - just as much a worry for you, as grass is for us. Lami, is more prevelant in UK that any where else in the world. So that beautiful silver sand has it's downfalls frown |

TRUST ME when I tell you there is nothing beautiful about it jane...LOL It makes our horses sick, it gets all over our floors, in our trucks, and when we aren't looking, it even gets up on our beds via the lovely, dirty dogs that we have..LOL bawling

oohh The Spanish sand was bad enough for me for 2 weeks last year, it got everywhere, AND I MEAN EVERYWHERE I am sorry it make em sick, I know Spy was real bad, OMG, it's as bad as me looking for Lami everyday. Remember I watched that programme, about the silver sands of Florida beaches, that is what I was thinking off, but cause it never entered my head from a horses point of view. Know wonder I have never heard of Sand Clear |
