I always used yarn, and sewed them in...and the same color as the horse's mane and tail as you can get...

I prefer yarn- less chance its going to break like bands do.

Yarn just has an overall nicer look.

I use rubber bands, purely because I cannot make thread look good. My banded manes look awesome but when I use thread it looks so sloppy!

We call yarn thread here, I think yarn looks heeps better, it's quicker and easier to.

I prefer to use thread....It's a type of waxed braiding thread...it looks nicer than yarn and it's easier to work with

I've done both ... but I got really lazy at horse shows and just did bands and buttoned them up small and tight ... they looked better then yarn, at least the yarn I could do.

However if it was a big show I'd hire someone to braid for me

I use bands

My trainer showed me an awesome way to do them with bands that IMO looks just as good, and IMO looks no different than with yarn. I know how to do it both ways, though.

Both. I sew them in then if I'm not happy I'll whack a band around them to catch any loose bits.
