I'll do either. I can make both look good.

If I have to get it done quick I just use band.
If I have time and really want to make it look nice I'll use yarn. Sometime I'll even do button braids with the yarn if I really have a lot of time

I use yarn =] Bands are such a hassle to get out. And I've seen them pop in the forelock and horses do not like that..

I have seen other people do it better with yarn.. but i cant do it with yarn so i do it with bands.. and it still looks really good

My daughter always used yarn. She sometimes would just pay someone who was good at it to do it at a bigger show, but she also braided herself. Yarn seemed to actually hold better.

I always use yarn, I think it's a bit more subtle than bands, and yarn comes in more colors so you can match your horses mane a bit closer. However, I always put elastics over my bands to keep them in place, either over night, for the trailering, until my first class etc. Then pull them out.
